Immunisations protect you and the people you love
The first time we are exposed to a germ, for example a bacterium or virus, it takes time for the immune system to respond and so we become unwell, sometimes seriously. However, once the immune system has memory of the infection, it is able to respond quickly to destroy the germ the next time we are exposed and reduces our chance of getting sick or ending up seriously ill.
Vaccines are made from either parts of a germ (for example the COVID spike protein) or weakened versions (measles) and effectively show the body’s immune system what the germ looks like and therefore gives the body the chance to prepare for an attack. Vaccination exposes the body to parts of the germ, without causing disease, and subsequently, if you are exposed to the real germ, your immune system can rapidly destroy it and prevent illness.

This schedule of immunisations provides the best protection for all our children when they are most at risk. The immunisation schedule starts in pregnancy, pēpē’s first home, and continues throughout life.
